At the Regular Meeting of Monday, September 13, 2010, a report to the Board of Trustees for the St. Clair Catholic District School Board directed that St. Michael Catholic School, Turnerville, undergo accommodation review, as we work towards a solution to the problem of excess capacity, due to declining enrolment.

Under the Terms of the Board’s Policy 7.4 – Student Accommodation and Boundary Review, and according to Ministry of Education guidelines, an Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) has been convened to lead the public review of this matter. The question that will be placed before the ARC is simply this: How do we best address the problem of excess vacant space in our school? The ARC will report its findings to the Board of Trustees, which has the sole responsibility for making decisions regarding possible school closures and/or consolidations.

The Chair and two members of the St. Michael Catholic School Advisory Council will serve as members of the ARC; along with Board Chaplain Jerry Lozon, as a representative of the Kent Deanery; and a member of the local business community, who is a Catholic ratepayer. Superintendent Deb Crawford will act as Chair of the Accommodation Review Committee.

All meetings of the ARC will be held in public at St. Michael Catholic School, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Any changes to times or locations of the meetings will be announced in advance. The dates of the meetings are as follows:

• Tuesday, October 28, 2010
• Tuesday, January 11, 2011
• Tuesday, February 8, 2011
• Tuesday, March 29, 2011

The recommendations of the Accommodation Review Committee will be made public following the meeting of Tuesday, March 29, 2011. The ARC report will be presented to the Board of Trustees at a special Regular Meeting immediately following the of Tuesday, March 29, 2011 ARC meeting. The senior administration of the Board will also put forward its recommendations at that same meeting. The Board of Trustees will make its decision with regard to St. Michael Catholic School, Turnerville at the Regular Meeting of Wednesday, June 29, 2011.
