In November of 2002, the St. Clair Catholic District School Board completed an accommodation review of two of its schools.
The administration had recommended a review of St. Helen School, Sarnia and Holy Rosary School, Wyoming. The Board's review process is one that involves a gathering of information and consultation among the School Councils, Trustees and the Board's administration. All reports are presented to the School Accommodation Review Committees, and reviewed by Trustees.
At its November 12, 2002 meeting, Trustees voted to close St. Helen School, effective July 1, 2003. They also voted to keep Holy Rosary School open, but only if the student population remains at or above a benchmark of 106 FTE for 2002-2003, and 110 FTE for each year after that.
The process of accommodation review is not unique to the St. Clair Catholic District School Board. Between 1997 and 2001, 176 elementary and 20 high schools in Ontario were closed.
