October 2, 2019
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I want to update you on the impact of the CUPE labour sanctions in our schools. As you know, CUPE Local 4168 is taking part in a province-wide legal strike action, which includes the partial withdrawal of services. At St. Clair Catholic, CUPE represents a number of education workers, including secretaries, custodians, educational assistants, early childhood educators, and library and computer technicians.
As a result of these labour sanctions, some school operations are being affected. These may include:
- At elementary schools, there may be delays in answering the front door buzzer. When visiting the school, please press the button and someone will be with you as soon as possible.
- For safety, the boundaries in school yards may be altered due to reduced supervision.
- Field trips may be cancelled or postponed.
- Pizza days and special food days may be postponed.
- Student nutrition programs may be postponed.
- Milk purchases may be postponed.
- School fundraising events may be postponed.
- All indoor and outdoor Community Use of Schools permits have been cancelled. Community organizations that have booked school facilities should contact Community Use of Schools at: https://cklass.ca/services/community-use-of-schools/
- Libraries in secondary school will have reduced hours.
- The academic awards ceremonies at secondary schools scheduled for October 17, 2019 have been cancelled. A decision whether to reschedule will be made at a later date.
Although this labour action presents challenges to our normal routines, St. Clair Catholic remains committed to student learning and academic programs continue. As always, our first priority is to operate schools in a safe environment for all students, staff and visitors.
Thank you for your ongoing support and patience during these difficult days.
Sincerely,
Deb Crawford
Director of Education
