Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing to provide you with information about the changing law regarding cannabis for non-medical purposes and how these changes will impact school boards and schools across Ontario. The federal Cannabis Act comes into effect today.
In our schools and on all Board property, cannabis for non-medical purposes will be treated the same as alcohol. Our policies regarding Student Discipline; Smoking; and Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug Abuse will continue to guide our decision making.
For your further information, fact sheets have been provided by Lambton Public Health and Chatham-Kent Public Health.
In addition, supports to parents and guardians are being provided through the education sector and are found in resources that are linked to the Ontario curriculum and the Ontario’s government’s current directives with respect to mental health and wellbeing. These materials include:
- A fact sheet for parents/guardians and caregivers with evidence based information on cannabis, developed in collaboration with CAMH and School Mental Health ASSIST.
- A resource for youth that provides factual information grounded in harm reduction and highlights risks of use/misuse, developed in collaboration with Kids Help Phone.
- For further information and updates about legalization of non-medical cannabis in Ontario, please see www.ontario.ca/cannabis, which contains links to additional information and resources.
If you have any questions, please contact your principal.
