Week at a Glance for Families

October 9 - 13, 2017

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

This week, you will notice that our school is starting to participate in WE initiatives.   Some of the students in Grade 7/8 recently attended the WE DAY Event in Toronto where we were all inspired to make a difference in the world!  This was all in part to Miss Nicolai who applied to have our school be a “WE School” - Thank you!  The grade 7/8  class will be leading us in a number of initiatives throughout the school year.

Just to let you know a bit of history behind all of this  -  Craig and Marc Kielburger are the co-founders of the WE Movement, which includes WE Charity, ME to WE Social Enterprise and WE Day. You may remember Craig and his brother Marc from years ago.  At the ages of twelve and seventeen - they founded a global movement against child slavery.  As you can see, they continue to be highly involved in social justice issues.  The following quotes will give you an idea of what a WE School is about.

Students who Live WE at School are stepping up and making a difference in their neighborhood and world at large. Because no matter your age or location, we can all make a positive impact—whether that’s volunteering, fundraising or raising awareness around causes that matter.”

“The WE Schools program gives young leaders the resources to dive into service-learning through the causes that spark their interest. Every resource is structured to provide three key learning outcomes: increased academic engagement, improved university and workplace readiness, and a commitment to active citizenship.”

If you have any questions, please feel free to let us know.  To find out more information about WE please refer to:

https://www.we.org/we-schools/

Week at a Glance for Families

October 2 - 6, 2017

Monday, October 2, 2017

  • Orange Shirt Day

    • “Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School commemoration event held in Williams Lake in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis’s account of losing her shiny new orange shirt on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.  The date was chosen because children are back in school, teachers have time to plan for the event, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the year.  Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and community agencies to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.”

Resources

I thought I would bring your attention to an excellent resource for parents to help your child succeed in math. As the booklet states:

“You are an important partner in your child’s mathematics education. When you find ways to engage your child in thinking and talking about mathematics, you are providing an important key for unlocking his or her future success.

Today, critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning ability and the ability to communicate mathematically are essential skills. These processes are the foundation of mathematics instruction in Ontario schools. They are brought into play as you engage your child in the activities suggested in this guide. Enjoy learning together! Helping students achieve excellence in mathematics is part of Achieving Excellence: A Renewed Vision for Education in Ontario. Learn more at ontario.ca/eduvision.

The book is also available in a variety of languages:

It offers a wide variety of helpful hints, fun family learning experiences and websites to support mathematics learning. Hope you enjoy it!!

Fun Family Math Game

Materials - One deck of cards, one dice

Directions: The players take all of the numbers from one suite of a deck of cards (i.e. all of the cards from 2 - 10 of the hearts).  Pretend the Ace is one.  They line the cards up in front of each player.  The players take turns rolling two dice - they may multiply, divide, add, or subtract or take the face value of the numbers on the dice (for example if they roll a two and a three they could flip a their 2 and 3 over.  They could flip 6 over (2x3=6), they could flip 1 over for 3-2=1.  The object of the game is to turn all of your cards over first so you cannot see the numbers.  If the player rolls two sixes, they have to flip all of their own cards back to the starting position.  If they roll two ones, they may use it to flip their cards over OR they may tell one of their opponents to flip all of their cards over and start over.
