Poor in possessions but rich in spirit

Ursuline College Chatham English teacher Patricia Pook, top centre in red, along with students Matt Seton, 15, Kayla Buston, 17, Amanda Bartlett, 18, Samantha Remington, 18, Taylor Imeson, 17, Bryn Appleton, 17, and Jonathan Seton, 17, spent time with underprivileged people in the Dominican Republic.

A handful of Chatham teenagers have returned from a Caribbean visit with a new outlook on life. Eight students from Ursuline College Chatham and two teachers spent a week in Consuelo, Dominican Republic, living and eating with locals. The students and teachers - Chris Gutteridge, who teaches religion and Patricia Pook, an English teacher - were billeted with families in the tiny, coastline community. "I learned you don't have to be rich or own lots of things to be happy in life,'' said 17-year-old Taylor Imeson, a Grade 12 student and one of the participants in the venture. Imeson said young people she encountered in Consuelo were "always happy and have plenty of friends.'' Eighteen-year-old Samantha Remington, a Grade 12 student, said the students cried when it was time to leave for home. " We had just a great time with great people,'' she said. "They had very little in the way of worldly items, but gave us so much in kindness and love.'' Amanda Bartlett, 18, also a Grade 12 student, said it was a trip she will always remember. "I'd love to return some day,'' she said. "My D.R. parents for the week were tremendous people.'' Grade 12 student Bryn Appleton said she couldn't get over the "sense of community'' that existed in the tiny Caribbean island. "All the kids in the neighbourhood go outside after dinner and play baseball or other games,'' she said. " They enjoy being together.'' Jonathan Seton, 17, also a Grade 12 student, said the community he visited was "very laid back. "The trust people have and the hope they have is incredible,'' he said. Pook said the venture was the first mission-based trip for the high school. "We hope to return next year with another group of students,'' she said. Pook said each participant in the trip took along a suitcase full of clothing, which was distributed to the needy by a group based in D.R. She said the program included visits to sugar cane plantations, local markets and beaches. Pook said the students are planning to put a power-point presentation together on their adventure to show to local groups. She said partial funding for the trip came from the Knights of Columbus in Wallaceburg and from participants. Sister Mary Doris of Chatham provided the students with 200 note pads containing poetry she wrote. Students raised money by selling the notepads.

High school rugby is growing

The Ursuline Lancers went from viewers to doers Thursday. After watching other teams play on TV last season, the Lancers debuted in the Kent high school girls rugby league at the season-opening clinic and controlled scrimmages at Victoria Park. The Blenheim Bobcats and Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks also took part. The league's fourth team, the Belle River Nobles, didn't attend. Lancers captain Nusia Dzieciol has played soccer and basketball at school. She signed up for rugby looking for a "cool", new experience. "When I heard we were having a team, I for sure wanted to play," she said. If the league can keep at least four teams for this year and next, it can join the Southwestern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (SWOSSAA) by the 2010-11 school year. The league almost had five teams. McGregor wanted to join, but didn't have enough players. Players from the Kent Havoc Rugby Football Club are helping to organize the league and coach the teams. They want to help the sport flourish in Chatham-Kent, starting in the high schools, said Havoc youth development officer Mike Lindsay. " We stepped up to help spread the wings of rugby in the community," he said. Rugby is off to a good start this season at Ursuline, which hadn't fielded a team for a few years. More than 40 players tried out and 26 are on the squad. " You have to be proud of our girls that come out and play this," coach Scott Morkin said. "Because they're taking a chance and trying something new." This is the first time some Lancers have participated in a school activity. "Some of the girls, it's the first team they were able to be on," Dzieciol said. "It's a good opportunity for them to bond and make new friends. I think by the end of the year, we'll be really close." The Lancers played the Golden Hawks in their first scrimmage and the defending champion Bobcats in the second. "We did really well in the first one," Dzieciol said. " We came out with a lot of motivation and energy. But the main thing was to learn - and we learned a lot." Coaches for each team were on the field giving advice during the scrimmages. Referees would also stop play to point out mistakes and explain the rules. The regular season begins the week of April 20, but Lindsay said the teams are already looking better than in previous seasons. " It's really starting to come around," he said. "We're seeing real rugby being played, which is excellent." The girls still have a lot to learn, Morkin said, but they're progressing quickly. " They did fantastic," said Morkin, said Morkin, who played four seasons of rugby at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N. B. " They did above and beyond what we thought they were going to do." Havoc officials would like to start a junior women's team if enough high school players are interested. That's one reason they're supporting the league.
