Panthers maul injury-plagued Lancers

The McGregor Panthers showed no sympathy Tuesday night. Facing the injury-ravaged Ursuline Lancers, the Panthers romped to a 70-48 win in the Kent 'AA-AAAA' senior boys basketball league. The unbeaten Panthers took a two-game lead over the Lancers and need just one win in their final three games to clinch first place. The Lancers were missing starters Max Allin and Bill Hastings. They dressed only six players. 

Also, the Wallaceburg Tartans outscored the Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks 6-2 in overtime for a 48-44 win. The Lambton-Kent Cardinals beat the Ridgetown Royals 48-25 in a 'A' senior game rescheduled from Dec. 10. In the 'AA-AAAA' junior league, McGregor downed Ursuline 49-33 and Chatham-Kent topped Wallaceburg 39-22. Ridgetown edged Lambton- Kent 33-28 in the 'A' junior league. In the midget league, McGregor defeated Ursuline 49- 34.

SENIOR 'AA-AAAA' Tartans 48, Golden Hawks 44 (OT)

At Wallaceburg, the Tartans rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Golden Hawks 14-6 for a 42-42 tie after regulation. Layton Bigjohn and Dustin Aquash each scored 14 points for the third-place Tartans (2-4). Joe Jacobs added nine. Jay Dick, Art Thompson and Aurelio Cunha each had 11 points for the Golden Hawks (0-6), who led 22-17 at halftime and 36-28 after three quarters. 

 JUNIOR 'AA-AAAA' Golden Hawks 39, Tartans 22 

Kohl Robinson scored 10 points and John Nguyen added nine for the Golden Hawks (3- 3). They led 10-6, 17-9 and 32-15 at the breaks. Naanan Williams had five points for the Tartans (0-6). Panthers 49, Lancers 33 Aaron L'Ecuyer had 17 points for the first-place Panthers (6-0), who led 25-15 at halftime. Jeremiah Hamilton and Josh Wright each added eight. Guillaume Lapensee scored 10 for the Lancers (3-3). Nick Hastings and Jeremy Gorzelak had five points apiece.

MIDGET Panthers 49, Lancers 34 

The Panthers evened their record at 2-2 with the win. The Lancers fell to 0-4.

Lancers lose close one to unbeaten Hawks

Newton's goal midway through the second period gave the Golden Hawks a 2-1 win over the previously undefeated Ursuline Lancers. The Golden Hawks are in first place with a 5-0-1 record, followed by the Lancers at 3-1-1. The McGregor Panthers are alone in third place after beating the Blenheim Bobcats 2-0 in Monday's other game. Golden Hawks 2, Lancers 1 At Erickson Arena, Hokey Langan also scored for the Golden Hawks and Missy Paxton-Batten had two assists. Langan opened the scoring in the first period, but Brooke Ludolph of the Lancers answered with 11:09 left in the second. Newton netted the winner with 8:28 remaining in the second period. Last year's finalists tied 1-1 in their first meeting Nov. 21. They'll face off again Feb. 11 for the third and final time in the regular season. Panthers 2, Bobcats 0 At Memorial Arena, Shannon Milkovic and Haley Piett scored for the Panthers (2-5-0). Erica Bennett posted the shutout for the Panthers' second consecutive win over the Bobcats. The loss dropped the Bobcats' record to 1-5-0. Monday's game was the third in eight days between Blenheim and McGregor. The Bobcats host the Pain Court Patriotes today at 2:30 p.m. in an exhibition game.

Double dose of good news for Lancers

The Ursuline Lancers received good news Thursday night that had nothing to do with their victory. Starting forward Bill Hastings was taken to the Sydenham campus of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance after leaving the court on a stretcher during their Kent 'AA-AAAA' senior boys basketball game in Wallaceburg. "They think he's going to be all right," Ursuline head coach Jim Dunlop said. Hastings was hit in the head during the first half, came out of the game for a while but went back in, Dunlop said. An ambulance was called when he felt ill at halftime. 

The Lancers beat the Tartans 49-30, while the McGregor Panthers trimmed the Chatham- Kent Golden Hawks 73-40 in the other 'AA-AAAA' game. In the 'A' senior league, the Blenheim Bobcats moved past Tilbury into third place with a 61-32 win over the Titans in a rescheduled game. The Chatham Christian Flames beat the Ridgetown Royals 41-31 in the other 'A' makeup game. In the 'AA-AAAA' junior league, Ursuline beat Wallaceburg 54-21 and McGregor topped Chatham-Kent 47-35. In the 'A' junior league, Blenheim defeated Tilbury 46- 32 and Chatham Christian downed Ridgetown 50-18. Chatham-Kent beat McGregor 50-42 in the midget league. 

SENIOR 'AA-AAAA' Lancers 49, Tartans 30 At Wallaceburg, Bryce Cumming scored 17 points for the Lancers (4-1) and Mitch Koehler had 11. They led 12-6, 22-15 and 36- 21 at the breaks. Randy Lucier scored eight points and Layton Bigjohn added seven for the Tartans (0- 5). Panthers 73, Golden Hawks 40 At CKSS, Mark Meko poured in 29 points for the Panthers (5- 0). Sam Youlton added 10 and Aaron Handsor scored nine. They outscored the Golden Hawks 25-10 in the second quarter for a 44-16 halftime lead. Peter Christian led the Golden Hawks (0-5) with 10 points, Jason Buliga scored nine and Jay Dick had eight. 

JUNIOR 'AA-AAAA' Panthers 47, Golden Hawks 35 Kumsa Yuya scored 11 points for the Panthers (5-0), who led 6-4, 31-16 and 36-28 at the quarters. John Nguyen had 16 points for the Golden Hawks (2-3) and Kohl Robinson scored five. Lancers 54, Tartans 21 Joe Hastings scored 12 points for the Lancers, who improved to 3-2. Naanan Williams led the Tartans (0-5) with six points. JUNIOR 'A' Bobcats 46, Titans 32 Spencer King tossed in 18 points for the first-place Bobcats (6-0). Nick Toll and Wayne Turgeon added nine apiece. Cornelius Wiebe scored nine points for the Titans (3-2) and Zak Simond had eight. The Bobcats led 6-4, 16-11 and 29-22 at the quarters. Flames 50, Royals 18 The Flames pulled away in the second half by outscoring the Royals 24-5 after halftime. The Flames improved to 5-1, while the Royals fell to 1-4. Individual statistics were not available. MIDGET Golden Hawks 50, Panthers 42 Chris Moore scored 15 points for the first-place Golden Hawks (4-0), Clinton Patrick had 12 and J.C. Emery added six.B.J. Reynolds led the Panthers (1-2) with 17 points and Eric Maier scored nine. The Panthers were up 25-24 at halftime, but the Golden Hawks rallied for a 41-33 lead entering the fourth.

SR.Boys Basketball Hoops

The McGregor Panthers cruised to a comfortable win by putting their game away in the first quarter. The Ursuline Lancers had to wait until the second, but their result was the same. The two powers in the Kent 'AA-AAAA' senior boys basketball league returned from the holiday layoff with victories Tuesday night. The Panthers led 19-4 after one quarter en route to a 61-29 win over the Wallaceburg Tartans. The Lancers, meanwhile, used a 19-6 surge in the second quarter to beat the Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks 61-36. McGregor is in first place with a 4-0 record, followed by Ursuline at 3-1. In the junior league, Chatham- Kent defeated Ursuline 35-30 and McGregor downed Wallaceburg 44-14. In the midget league, Chatham-Kent rallied to beat Ursuline 34-23. 

Lancers 61, Golden Hawks 36 

At Ursuline, Max Allin scored 16 points, Bryce Cumming had 10 and Mitch Koehler eight for the Lancers. They led 17-12, 36-18 and 52-23 at the quarters. Aurelio Cunha paced the Golden Hawks (0-4) with 12 points and Peter Christian scored 10. 

Golden Hawks 35, Lancers 30

The Golden Hawks staged a second-half comeback for the win. They trailed 18-14 at halftime but went into the fourth quarter leading 22-21. Tom Bednarik scored 12 and Rock Kim had seven points for the Golden Hawks (2-2). Shayne Steele of the Lancers (2-2) had nine points. Brian Phan and Joe Hastings each added eight. 

MIDGET Golden Hawks 34, Lancers 23 

Dylan Bell scored nine points and Chris Moore added eight for the first-place Golden Hawks (3-0). They outscored the Lancers 20-4 in the second half to wipe out a 19-14 halftime deficit. Zack Dowd had five points and Conor O'Neill netted four for the Lancers (0-3).
