Taylor Mcarthur wasn't
about to let a little sickness slow him down during
the Kent track and field championship on Wednesday
Ursuline Lancer Taylor Mcarthur leaps over the water
hazard during the 2,000-metre steeplechase at the
Kent track and field championship held at the Chatham-Kent
Community Athletic Complex on Wednesday. Mcarthur
was the male athlete of the meet.
The Ursuline College Chatham student was the male
athlete of the meet, held at the Chatham-Kent
Community Athletic Complex. Mcarthur, 19, said he
had been suffering from strep throat, but battled
through it recently. "Once I got into the race,
it was all right," he said. "There were
points you have that little voice in your head
that's telling you to slow down. But I've been
training hard enough that I'm mentally prepared
enough to fight the pain." On Wednesday,
Mcarthur took the senior boys' titles in the
1,500metre run (4:13.19) and 2,000metre steeplechase
(6:32.80). He won the 3,000 metres (9:40.52) on
Tuesday. It was Mcarthur's third-straight athlete of
the meet award, although he said his friend Ryan
Mcnamara, of Chatham Christian, didn't make it easy
on him in the events. The top four in each event
qualified for the SWOSSAA championships Wednesday,
May 23, at the Chatham-Kent complex and Thursday,
May 24, at the University of Windsor. Mcarthur hopes
to bring home a gold in the 1,500 metres. "I
know I'm capable of it," he said. "It's
just about hitting the right race." He's never
competed in steeplechase at SWOSSAA. He also expects
solid competition in the 3,000 metres. "I want
to see what I can do in a 3K," he said.
"So I kept that one and dropped the 800
(metres) this year, which was a tough
decision." Blenheim's Olivia Flook, 18, was the
top female athlete, an honour she also won in 2009.
She finished first in the senior girls' 1,500 metre
run (5:27.71) and the 1,500-metre steeplechase
(5:40.82). "This is my ideal day to run,"
she said, noting she had hoped for a strong
performance. "It was a little windy, but it was
good." Flook credited Wallaceburg's Erinn Lee,
who was her biggest challenger. "She really
pushed me to keep going and get my time
faster," she said. "We were kind of
battling it out for all of our events." On
Tuesday, she also won the 3,000 metres (12:06.43).
She believes it will be a tough field of competitors
at SWOSSAA. There was one record set at this year's
Kent meet. Ursuline's Matt Monroe won the ambulatory
100 metres with time of 18.88 seconds. This beats
the previous mark set in 2010 of 23.71.
