Vancouver Winter Olympics - Classroom Resources

The Winter Olympics in Vancouver from February 12 - 28, 2010

Winter Olympic Volunteer F.A.Q.'s

1. How did you get to become a volunteer at the Winter Olympics?

I completed an online application when it became available on February 12, 2007 - two years before the Olympics. In February of 2008, I received a telephone interview and an invitation to attend "Creating Team Training" in Vancouver. In late summer of 2009, I received a tentative volunteer offer.

2. What will your job be?

I am volunteering with the Technology Team in the Main Media Centre in Vancouver. My job will be Print Distribution Supervisor. The Main Media Centre will house journalists and media. It is located in the Canada Place building.

3. How many hours do you have to volunteer?

I am obligated to complete thirteen, 8.5 hour shifts. Most of my shifts are from 3:30 pm - midnight PST. This will allow me to connect with classrooms in the AM.

4. Do you receive free tickets to any events?

No. Any events that I would like to attend, I will have to purchase a ticket.

5. Is the Vancouver Olympic Committee paying for your accommodation and flight?

No and no. I am fortunate to being staying with a good friend from University who now lives in Surrey, with her husband and two children. She also has a volunteer position with the Ceremonies.

6. How have you completed training?

I have had ongoing training to complete. Portions of it have been online modules (eLearning) and some has been in print. Before I complete my first actual shift on February 13th, I will have to complete on-site training.

If you have any additional questions about the "Volunteer" process or what I will be doing at the Vancouver Olympics, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at sharon.korpan@st-clair.net
