Assignment Specific Objectives

Health and Safety

HS1     an understanding of workplace health and safety rules

HS2     the appropriate use of safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and smoke and carbon monoxide 
           detectors

HS3     an understanding of the need for personal protective equipment, including goggles, gloves, boots, and 
           aprons

HS4     an understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

HS5     the correct handling of materials and equipment as specified in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems 
           (WHMIS) training program

HS7     the procedures for reporting accidents

HS8     the procedures for reporting unsafe practices

Health and Safety Presentation

This assignment will prepare you for your co-op workplace by attending a Health and Safety seminar.

An employee of the Young Workers Awareness Program and WSIB will present materials relating to general Health and Safety, WHMIS and your rights in the workplace.  This is a prelude to your specific training at your workplace.

Before the presentation you may be asked to complete the following worksheet using the Young Worker Awareness website.

2. What you know can save your life
3. The law protects your Health and Safety
4. The law expects your employer and supervisor to make sure the workplace is healthy and safe
5. You can expect to have required information, training and equipment you need to protect yourself
6. You must report an injury or illness to your supervisor
7. Don’t gamble with your Health and Safety – protect yourself.
